In BaZi, the goal is not to have all five elements, but to have the right balance for your unique Day Master to thrive. The concepts of Favourable and Unfavourable elements form the foundation of practical chart interpretation.

Favourable Element : Supports, strengthens, or balances your Day Master. It brings harmony, progress, and opportunity.

Unfavourable Element : Overpowers or weakens your chart’s balance. When active, it may lead to challenges, blockages, or instability.

🧍‍♂️ Step 1: Identify the Day Master

BaZi chart displaying the Day Master Xin (Metal) and associated elements, including elements of strength, investment, and career.

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar, it represents you, your core personality and energetic foundation.

Example:

A person born on a Yang Wood (甲) Day Master is like a tall tree: strong, upright, but may need nurturing Earth or cutting Metal to stay refined.

🌦️ Step 2: Assess the Chart’s Strength

Next, determine whether the Day Master is strong or weak, this is essential before labeling elements as good or bad.

Factors that affect strength:

Season of birth (Month Branch): A Fire Day Master born in summer = strong; born in winter = weak.

Support from other stems and branches (same element or producing element)

Clash or suppression from controlling or countering elements

đź’ˇ A strong Day Master usually benefits from elements that weaken or control it, while
a weak Day Master benefits from elements that support or produce it.

We have discussed about this topic in more lenghty details in this previous article:

🧭 Step 3: Identify Favourable and Unfavourable Elements

Using the Five Elements cycle, determine:

🔥 For a Weak Day Master, favourable elements are:

Self element (to strengthen you)

Producing element (to build you up)

Unfavourable: Elements that drain or control you

đź’¨ For a Strong Day Master, favourable elements are:

Controlling element (to regulate power)

Element that weakens you (to reduce excess energy)

Unfavourable: Too much support or producing energy that makes you overpowering and unbalanced

🧪 Example: Yang Fire (丙) Day Master Born in Summer

Summer boosts Fire → strong Day Master

Producing element (Wood) is excessive in spring/summer → may overfeed Fire

Favourable elements: Water (controls Fire), Metal (weakens Fire)

Unfavourable elements: Wood and Fire (already too strong)

🧠 Common Misconceptions

Not all wealth stars are favourable, a weak Day Master can’t handle wealth properly.

Not all output stars are good, strong output may drain a weak chart dangerously.

Your favourable element may not be your most dominant one, that’s the trap many fall into.

🛠️ Why This Matters

Knowing your favourable elements helps you:

Choose supportive career paths (e.g., Wood-related vs Metal-related industries)

Make strategic timing decisions (Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars)

Use Feng Shui activations effectively (matching elements to space)

Guide relationships, health, and personal growth

In BaZi, there’s no such thing as a “good” or “bad” chart, only balanced or imbalanced ones. Learning to identify your favourable and unfavourable elements is the first step toward living in harmony with your own energy blueprint.

Want to dive deeper? Start with your Day Master and the season you were born in, that alone opens the door to understanding your energetic ecosystem.

What Is the Day Master?

In Bazi, your Day Master (DM) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar and it represents you. It is the anchor of the entire chart and determines how you interpret everything else around it.

But here’s the catch: not all Day Masters are created equal.

Before we can say what a chart needs, or which elements are favourable, we must answer one critical question:

Is the Day Master strong or weak?

⚖️ What Does “Strong” or “Weak” Mean?

It’s not about good or bad, it’s about balance of energy.

A strong Day Master is one that receives a lot of support from the season, from surrounding elements, or both.

A weak Day Master is under-supported, either born in an unfavourable season or surrounded by clashing or draining elements.

The strength of your Day Master determines whether it needs to be supported or to be controlled in order to restore harmony in your BaZi chart.

🔍 How to Assess Strength

  1. Season of Birth (Month Branch)

This is the most important factor.

If you’re a Yang Wood (甲) Day Master born in spring, you’re naturally strong. Wood thrives in spring.

If you’re a Yang Metal (ĺşš) born in winter, you’re strong. Metal is dominant in that season.

If your Day Master is out of season, it’s likely weak.

  1. Surrounding Stems and Branches

Elements that support or produce your Day Master increase its strength.

Elements that control, drain, or weaken reduce its strength.

Repeated appearances of the Day Master or its producing element = potential over-strengthening.

  1. Balance and Distribution

It’s not about one element alone. The full mix must be considered:

Too much support can lead to overbearing strength (which still needs weakening).

Too little support can lead to fragility, which needs nurture and protection.

🧠 What Does a Strong Day Master Need?

A strong Day Master has a lot of power already. To keep it balanced:

âś… Needs:

Output (to release energy): Output stars (Eating God, Hurting Officer)

Wealth (to control it): Wealth stars (Direct/Indirect Wealth)

Power (to restrain or direct it): Power stars (7 Killings, Direct Officer)

❌ Avoids:

More support (same element or producing element), which can cause imbalance

Excessive Resource stars

🧠 What Does a Weak Day Master Need?

A weak Day Master lacks stability. To stay balanced:

âś… Needs:

Same element (companions) to reinforce

Producing element (resources) to nourish

Supportive seasons or elements

❌ Avoids:

Output (which drains energy)

Wealth (which overworks the weak DM)

Power stars (which control when there’s nothing to be controlled)

🔄 Why It Matters

Almost every decision in Bazi interpretation from identifying favorable elements, assessing career potential, compatibility, health risks, and timing depends on understanding the strength of your Day Master.

For example:

A weak Water DM should avoid overloading on Metal (which produces Water) if it causes flooding.

A strong Fire DM might look successful but can burn out without proper control from Water or Earth.

Now, with modern Bazi tools, there are sections where it shows the 5 structures of the person. This is a shortcut to know the strength of your Day Master. Just look at your Companion strength, it is not the most accurate way but it is a quick shortcut.

Understanding whether your Day Master is strong or weak is the starting point for accurate BaZi reading. It’s not about labeling people, but about restoring harmony. A balanced chart leads to smoother life experiences, better decision-making, and strategic use of timing.

A strong Day Master must learn restraint. A weak Day Master must learn support. Both must learn balance.

7th Aug – 6th Sep 2025 month of Wood Monkey

In the Month of the Monkey, Metal clashes with Jia Wood, signaling intense, transformative energy. Success this month favors those willing to adapt, sacrifice, or move when needed. Supporting stars like the Great Moon and Intelligence Star enhance problem-solving and strategic thinking.

Jia Wood FR / 7K
This month reveals people’s true character. Under pressure, selfishness, incompetence, and genuine loyalty will come to light. Some may falter or drag you down, so stay alert. Observe who truly deserves your trust, support, and future investment.

Yi Wood RW / DO
This month highlights the importance of strategy and discipline over reaction and force. Focus on your core strengths and resist the urge to follow competitors blindly, especially if their moves are unsustainable or driven by hidden agendas. Stick to your values and long-term vision. Those who operate with clarity and consistency will build lasting trust, while reckless players will eventually fade.

Bing Fire IR / IW
This month is about turning raw potential into lasting value. You have resources ready and now it’s time to test, refine, and focus on what brings real returns. Without clear direction, your efforts may be wasted on low-value outcomes. Be intentional. Identify your most valuable offering and build something meaningful, not just recorded on paper, but felt in real impact.

Ding Fire DR / DW
Success and continuity depend on how well you apply and share your knowledge. Balance matters because too little or too much leads to burnout or inefficiency. Sustainable growth comes from clear processes, consistent learning, and passing on wisdom so the flame stays lit long after you’ve stepped away.

Wu Earth 7K / EG
Success often comes not from force, but from breaking problems into manageable steps and approaching them creatively. When old solutions fail, innovation leads the way. Real progress begins when you dare to see things differently.

Ji Earth DO / HO
Exceptional talent can’t thrive in a limiting environment because eventually, something breaks. If you’ve outgrown your current space, it may be time to move to richer ground, whether that means a new company or country. Just be honest about your value, and know the leap requires commitment. If you choose to move, do it fully.

Geng Metal IW / FR
Collaborating with others lets you move faster, pool skills, and share risk—but only if the rewards are fairly distributed. It’s also a test of character: some teammates contribute, others drain. Pay attention. Real allies help lift the weight, not add to it—and knowing who they are makes all the difference when the next opportunity comes.

Xin Metal DW / RW
Entering serious competition without the right preparation or resources puts you at a major disadvantage. The rules may be the same, but the level of play is entirely different. In business, especially in fundraising, many chase big wins without realizing the risks. Some succeed, but others lose control to investors with short-term agendas. Be honest about your readiness, use your resources wisely, and if you’re taking a risk purely for the experience, do it with full awareness.

Ren Water EG / IR
This month may spark a bold idea others see as risky or eccentric but the real question is whether you’re risking your reputation or just your ego. If your foundation is strong, treat it as a playful experiment. Every breakthrough once seemed impossible. Failures fade, but progress sticks.

Gui Water HO / DR
Knowledge only becomes power when shared with clarity and confidence. Every major innovation faced resistance before becoming the norm. Not everyone will understand your vision, and that’s okay. Share boldly, but choose your audience wisely. Progress moves forward, with or without everyone’s approval.

4th Apr – 4th May month of Metal Dragon

It’s a time to consolidate and refine your existing resources and relationships. Reflect on overlooked skills, tools, and connections, and leverage them effectively. Strengthen personal and professional relationships through appreciation and gratitude, enhancing opportunities for growth. Seek guidance from wise mentors, approaching them with humility and openness. Focus not only on achieving goals but also on valuing experiences and relationships that sustain your long-term success.

Jia Wood 7K / IW

Success depends entirely on prior calculation. This symbolizes the energy of 7K / IW which is taking calculated risks rather than reckless gambles. It’s crucial never to risk more than you can safely lose. Wise navigation involves distributing risks cautiously, evaluating your financial resilience, and knowing precisely when restraint is the better strategy. Ultimately, success isn’t about always winning; it’s about ensuring you’re still in the game for future battles.

Yi Wood DO / DW

This month’s energy prefers leveraging strength through careful control and persistent effort. The DO / DW energy encourages nurturing connections and relationships proactively, recognizing that your power often derives from external support systems. Strength must always be paired with strategic foresight—blind force alone leads to unintended harm. Direct your energy purposefully and maintain plans to mitigate any unintended consequences.

Bing Fire IW / EG

The IW / EG energy encourages strategic innovation rooted in real-world demand. While creativity is vital, its successful implementation depends on careful market assessment, sufficient resource investment, and balancing bold ideas with practical viability. Not all innovations succeed, so thoughtful execution and market alignment are essential to minimize risks. Innovation and strategic risk-taking is the theme.

Ding Fire DW / HO

DW / HO energy emphasizes visibly showcasing your skills and confidently asserting your value. Effective utilization involves highlighting your strengths, disregarding unnecessary criticism, surrounding yourself with people who recognize true expertise, and cutting decisively through resistance. Visibility paired with substance ensures sustainable success. Gaining visibility and performing high-value execution for this month.

Wu Earth EG / FR

Collective innovation and collaboration is the theme for Wu Day Master in April. The EG / FR energy promotes collaborative innovation, encouraging the sharing and refinement of ideas through interaction. Successful innovators combine existing concepts into superior, practical solutions. Prioritize real-world testing over isolated perfectionism, and focus on tangible results that can be improved through continuous collaboration and feedback.

Ji Earth HO / RW

Effective competition isn’t about reinventing an industry entirely, but identifying small, overlooked market gaps. There should be strategic differentiation and dominating niche markets. HO / RW energy encourages confidently highlighting practical advantages over competitors without relying on direct attacks. Consistent innovation and improvement safeguard your competitive edge and ensure long-term relevance and success.

Geng Metal FR / IR

Direct curiosity productively toward areas offering meaningful insights or opportunities, such as thorough market research, without getting sidetracked by irrelevant distractions. Use collective wisdom strategically to identify and fulfill market needs.

Xin Metal RW / DR

There could be learning opportunities from established foundations. RW / DR energy underscores the importance of understanding and building upon established knowledge rather than attempting unnecessary innovations. Strong foundations with deep industry understanding, sound financial strategies, and respect for established market rules are essential before venturing into new expansions or innovations.

Ren Water IR / 7K

IR / 7K energy emphasizes managing intensity carefully, applying courage and aggression selectively. Recognizing warning signs, releasing controlled pressure, and handling unavoidable disruptions with strategic foresight ensure sustainable stability and controlled success, even in high-stakes situations. Ren Day Master must be flexible like water under pressure without boiling up.
